STEP BY STEP

These are some of the main stepstones of our journey:

1979
  • First training course for blind computer programmers in Bologna (Italy), at the Istituto Cavazza (the training course will repeat on a year basis)
  • OPTACON, access tool for blind PC users is made

1980
  • ASPHI is founded, with the name 'Associazione per lo Sviluppo Professionale degli Handicappati nel campo dell’Informatica" - meaning 'Association for the professional development of disabled people through the use of information technology
1981
  • ASPHI's delegation has been received by the President of the Italian Repubblic, Sandro Pertini
1982
  • The "International Conference for Information Technology Professions for Young Disabled Adults" is organized in Bologna (Italy)
1983
  • First course for disabled programmers is set up in Milanano, presso Fondazione Don Gnocchi (il corso si ripeterà poi con cadenza annuale)
1984
  •  Making of  the first braille-barr PC-attachable in cooperation with CNR LADSEB of Padova (Italy).
1985
  • First school project: in cooperation with Regione Emilia Romagna, regarding deaf and partially deaf children in elementary schools
  • Making of the first vocal sythetizer for the blind in cooperation with CNR IROE of Florence (Italy).
  • Constituted in Bologna the cooperative Anastasis, which supports ex-students of ASPHI's training courses on software development
1986
  • For trial run of PC usage for the integration of blind students in the class, in Bologna (Italy).
1987
  • First Software Programming training course for deaf people in Bologna
1988
  • The President of the Italian Repubblic, Francesco Cossiga visits ASPHI's main branch in Bologna
  • First Software Programming training course for mobility impaired people in Rome
  • First learning sofware packages are presented, as realized by ASPHI and Anastasis
1989
  • First show about information technolowy and access tools for people with disabilities in Bologna (Italy), presso il SIOA.
  • Partecipation to numerous international events on technology for disability, in USA, Germania, Regno Unito, Spagna, Austria, Russia

1990
  • The Pope, John Paul II visits ASPHI, at Fondazione Don Gnocchi of Rome (Italy).
  • In cooperation with CNSD IBM, Thinkable is realized, learning rehabilitation software for brain damaged persons
  • ASPHI's statutes changes and with it, the meaning of its name, which now is: "Associazione per lo Sviluppo di Progetti Informatici per gli Handicappati"
1991
  • Mourning time for ASPHI: Giovanni Zanichelli, founder and inspirator, dies.
  • First software programming training course for blind people in Moscow
1992
  • Activity started in Moscow continues and the second training course for blind programmers starts.
  • The programme SIAD, is realised, a prototype for an environment control system trough the voice for gravely mobility impaired persons
1993
  • First trial run of tele-working for a mobility impaired person, in Puglia, a southern region of Italy
  • Training course for blind programmers in Athens
1994
  • New contacts and experiences with other countries (Spain, Norway), within the school system experience
1995
  • Project Cigno, for the training of teachers of Professional Institutes on disability awareness
  • Together with the Padua University, Eargames, software for mass screening of hearing difficulties in children
  • Project GOAL, for personalised online-training within Horizon Community Initiative
1996
  • European Project Workable, for the link between disabled university students and employment and Teamnet, within tele-work
  • Partecipation to GLIC, Gruppo di Lavoro Interregionale dei Centri Ausili
  • Project for the use of software on behalf of adults with psychologic-neural problems, at a CSE in Milan (Italy).
  • First publication of ASPHI's 'diary', containing useful informations about disability
1997
  • First edition, in Bologna of HANDImatica, show-convention towards promoting integration of people with disabilities through the use of ICT technologies, a unique initiative in Italy
  • ASPHINFORMA is born, a quarterly magazine from ASPHI
1998
  • ASPHI is formally identified as 'Onlus' (translated from Italian stands for 'non-profit charitable organization')
  • Course TOP, finalised towards training young disabled would-be entrapreneurs, at the INAIL(equivalent of Italian State Insurance Organization) of Bologna
  • Project Prometeo, promoted by Comune di Bologna, towards facilitating navigation of disability-related internet-sites
  • Pubblicatione of the book Handicap e computer; (Editor Franco Angeli)
  • Seconda edition of HANDImatica, in Bologna
1999
  • The Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro receives at the Quirinale a delegation from ASPHI
  • After Bologna, Milano and Rome, a new ASPHI branch is established in Turin
  • The STEP Project is set up at the Bologna branch of ASPHI, Centre for Technological Support of Personal Education
  • Project EULEX, with IBM Italia, for the online-assessment of learning disabilities, in particular about dislexia
  • Project SPORTABILI, with INAIL, in the Trento province towards the integration of people with disabilities in sports and recreational activities.

2000
  • Publication of the volume "20 years of constant engagement at the service of people with disabilities". Manifestation for ASPHI's twenty years (June 16th 2000).
  • Third edition, in Bologna, of HANDImatica, national exhibition-conference for the integration of people with disabilities.
  • PLURIMINORAZIONE: triennial project of research and experimentation activities in favour of plurihandicapped people on assignment of the Emilia-Romagna Region.
  • SPOT project: transfer to the VOS of Moscow (Association of the Blind) of the organizational methodology and experiences in the set up of a school for blind managers.
  • Integrated project for the constitution of new enterprises and independent job for people with disabilities in the field of assistive technologies (IFCI) - (Promoter: Didacta onlus).
  • ECDL project to obtain the European Computer Driving Licence. 
  • INAIL: coordination of a group of people with disabilities to test the Customer satisfaction of a Call center for disabled people. 
  • TOP project: course held to the INAIL Prosthesis Center in Vigorso of Budrio (BO). TOP had the objective of providing to some people with disabilities tools and opportunities to start and successfully manage their own business in the on line telematic services.
2001
  • In cooperation with AICA, ASPHI becomes the official ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) assessment centre for people with disabilities.
  • Cooperation with INAIL towards the realisation of a call-centre dealing with enquiries about disability. Start up of the project "I-RETRAINING" in Vigorso of Budrio (BO).
  • TI.CO project: a "search action" on the use of technologies in order to favour the social integration of people with disabilities, in collaboration with the Regional Province of Palermo.
  • PLURIHANDICAP phase 2: development of instruments for the social operators, advising documentation, publication of a research.
  • HANDITECNO portal in collaboration with INDIRE (ex BDP) and participation in a work group to realise and organize the portal contents on assistive tools and disabilities.
  • ECDL Start project: development of autodidactic materials for people with physical and sensorial disabilities to obtain the ECDL (European Computer Driving License) within the programming FSE of the Emilia-Romagna Region.
  • TARGET: creation, in Turin, of an advising centre to support Medium and Small Enterprises for the application of the Law 68/99 on the "aimed placement" of people with disabilities into the workplace.
  • AIPA: participation in a work group constituted within the Authority for the Computer Science of the Public Administration for the correct placement of people with disabilities into the workplace.
  • AUTISMO: start up of a study-research on the application of Computer Science solutions (ICT- Information Communication Technology) into the educational and rehabilitation processes of autistic people.
2002
  • Fourth edition of Handimatica, national convention and fair for the integration of people with disabilities.
  • MASTER "SERGIO NERI": transformation and preparation of material concerning special pedagogical issues for the creation of remote teaching modules. Collaboration project with the Universities of: Bologna, Modena, Parma-Reggio Emilia and Ferrara, and RER Documentation Centres.
  • Conference in Palermo for the presentation of the results of the TI.CO project in collaboration with the Regional Province.
  • HABIT project: methods for using technologies aimed at operators/educators who work with mentally retarded adults. Conference in Milan to present the "Si può fare se" project.
  • SISS laboratories with the Universities of: Bologna, Pavia, Ferrara, Campobasso, and the Bicocca University in Milan.
  • ONLINE INTEGRATION: creation of a portal offering products, services and advice on ICT and people with disabilities (Didacta Project) via the Internet to professional institutes in Emilia-Romagna.
  • HANDITUTOR: project for the organization of an online support service for learning support teachers in the Lombardy Region.
  • INAIL projects for the integration of people with disabilities, developed in various regions in Italy: Lombardy, Tuscany, Aosta Valley and Emilia-Romagna. 
  • WEB TEST project on web accessibility and use, developed for SOGEI and the Emilia-Romagna Region. 
  • ECDL project for people with disabilities: complete production of multimedia material within the FSE programme of the Emila-Romagna Region.
  • ECDL-PD (ECDL for People with Disabilities): Project for the identification of problems and needs of people with disabilities with regard to tests for obtaining the European qualification demonstrating competency in computer skills.
  • "GUIDELINES" project: Creation of a workgroup and quality survey of the degree of integration of disabled people in companies participating in the initiative:
  • EARGAMES: extension of the audiological screening project to the city of Turin.
2003
  • METHA project: launch of the research and action project aimed at mentally retarded adults in collaboration with the Regional Province of Palermo.
  • "VEDERE VOCI" project: experiments with multimedia instruments for the comprehension of university lessons by deaf students, in collaboration with the disabled students service of the University of Bologna.
  • ERGONOMY AND THE COMPUTER: remote training course aimed at school and educational workers. (Didacta Project developed on the Online Integrations platform).
  • DOCUMENTHA project: coordination, support and training for the creation of a Documentation Centre for Integration on "CDI di Palermo" technologies, in collaboration with the Centro Studi Virtualmente.
  • PRIMARY SCHOOLS AND THE COMPUTER: KIDSMART project in collaboration with the IBM Italia Foundation (Ferrara, Rimini, Naples, Palermo, Formigine (MO), Sasso Marconi (BO). The computer as a means to encourage the integration of disabled children and as an instrument for learning, communicating and playing with a view to integration. 
  • GUIDELINES: Research on the degree of integration of disabled people in the workplace. Spreading of actions adopted as a consequence. Launching of workgroups on specific issues (e.g. Design for all). Production of a brochure.
  • ECDL ADVANCED: New advanced level of the European qualification project within the FSE programme of the Emila-Romagna Region.
  • INAIL "I-RETRAINING": Details of the results achieved by the project in 2003. Ten specially trained disabled people present their case studies to the business community as a testimonial of their course of action.
  • Vademecum for Test Centers: production and circulation of a publication for accessibility to ECDL tests for people with disabilities.
  • "LOTTO B" system launch, by the Ministry of Labour as part of a technical assistance programme for employment centres.
  • WEB TEST carried out on accessibility, creation of procedures and organization of educational and training opportunities for the public and private sectors.
  • Interesting opportunities for non-profit organizations, schools and universities: free use of the software for one year. 
  • WAT (Web Adaptation Technology) by IBM. In collaboration with the IBM Italia Foundation, ASPHI promotes the product that assists disabled people to surf the web. 
  • "Return to work" Conference: experiences, personalised re-qualification and targeted placement of people with an acquired disability, organized by the INAIL Prosthesis Centre of Vigorso di Budrio and by ASPHI OnluS in Bologna. 
  • "SIMULANDO" Programme in Cernobbio on the occasion of the "European Conference on e-government". 
  • "SIMULANDO" at "Futuro Remoto" (Città della Scienza - Bagnoli - Naples): a programme was set up that enabled actual testing of the difficulties that disabled people experience with the computer and the solutions that ICT technology has to offer them. 
  • Seminar: "Technological aids for Disabled People -Aids, programmes and services to simplify integration into the social, school and work environment" organized by ASPHI in collaboration with the University of Naples "Federico II".
  • Memorandum of Understanding signed in Paris: the 24 organizations (including only ASPHI for Italy) signed on 28 April 2003 in Paris along with the W3C/WAI (Web accessibility Initiative), a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for setting up the EuroAccessibility Project.
  • In TUNIS Asphi is the only Italian representative at the Conference for the "Promotion of the employment of people with disabilities".
  • ASPHI participates in the Educational Technologies Fair (TED) in Genoa and organizes a seminar.
2004
  • ONLUS FOUNDATION: ASPHI begins to operate effectively as a foundation at the beginning of 2004.
  • DOCUMENTHA 2 project: Conference for the presentation of the CDI in Palermo.
  • AUTISM: implementation of phase 2 of the project that envisages the activation of research and action programmes in schools and examination of the requirements for designing software tools.
  • SIMULANDO in Bologna in collaboration with the Municipality in the former Sala Borsa (Stock Exchange Room) for students and the general public. 
  • DYSLEXIA: creation of an ICT laboratory for dyslexic pupils/students at ASPHI in collaboration with AID (Italian Dyslexia Association). Projects with schools to simplify integration of students with specific learning disabilities.
  • METHA Conference for the presentation of the results of the project at the Regional Province of Palermo.
  • GUIDELINES: Comparison of the new measures of intervention developed by the enterprises participating in the workgroup for effective work integration of disabled co-workers.
  • ECDL ADVANCED: creation and testing of a multimedia CD with special self-training procedures for the deaf, within the FSE programme of the Emilia-Romagna Region.
  • "Impiego Point" construction of a collaboration network among liaison operators of Provincial Employment Centres.
  • INAIL: consolidation and distribution of services for the assisted person and intervention throughout the region for professional re-qualification. End of the I-RETRAINING project in Vigoroso di Budrio. 
  • Conclusion of the @RT-LAB project in Tuscany. 
  • WEB ACCESSIBILITY EXPERT training: creation of an innovative course (the first in Italy) specifically oriented to forming professional web accessibility experts.
  • SPECIAL=NORMAL: publication of the project is completed.
  • ACCESSIBILITY OF INTERNET SITES: seminar organized by the ASPHI Foundation in Milan at the IBM Forum.
  • Conference entitled "INAIL and welfare for work. The Tuscan example", organized by Inail in collaboration with ASPHI and ANMIL in Florence. 
  • "SIMULANDO" in Aosta for lower and senior secondary schools in the region.
  • Q-MAT: software for dyscalculia developed with trainees in the degree course in Information Technology at the University of Bologna. 
  • HANDIMATICA 2004, fifth edition of the convention and fair organized by ASPHI.

2005

  • DOCUMENTHA 2 Project: Conference for the presentation of the activities of the CDI in Palermo.
  • SIMULANDO in Palermo at the Fair of the Mediterranean: participation of many schools and operators.
  • SIMULANDO is "adopted" by IBM for activities at the IBM Accessibility Center and PA Forum in Rome.
  • E-@art: with the obtainment of the ECDL Advanced qualification by persons assisted by INAIL in the Region of Tuscany, the professional qualification of the IT operator is recognised.
  • Creation of a portal at the Department of Social Policies of the Regional Province of Palermo to present the activities of the various subject areas it handles and, in particular, for the documentation of the experiences regarding the projects financed.
  • Ministry of Health: technical and subjective control of accessibility of the Ministry's site and sensitisation seminars.
  • Accessibility: continuation of sensitisation activities for the accessibility of Internet sites.
  • Termination of the course "THE DEAF PERSON IN THE CLASSROOM: Methods for the integration and supportive ICT technologies".
  • Launch of the MASTER "Technologies for the quality of life" in collaboration with the University of Bologna: 15 regular participants with RER training vouchers and 4 students sitting in on lessons.
  • First experiment in the classroom of The Deaf at University project.
  • Continuation of the integration process at school of a child with serious multidisabilities, also through the use of video-communication tools.
  • SIMULANDO and workshop as part of the three days on the subject "mental retardation and technologies" organized by the CDH of Modena.
  • ASPHI participates in Riccione at the MIUR seminar: "Integration in schools of handicapped pupils in the reform scenarios".
  • Development of experimental software with trainees of the degree course in IT technology at the University of Bologna.
