How many people with disabilities are there in Italy ?

 

~ 3,000,000 making approximately 5 % of the population (in Europe it's 10%)

  • Men: 40%

  • Women: 60 %

4% of newborn babies have malformations or congenital disabling illnesses. 

 

 

Families involved in disability:

 

2,362,000 out of 20,561,000 (- 3,595,000 single disabled people)

approximately 14 % of all families

 

 

Disabled people by tipology

 

Mobility: ~ 1,100,000  of which 60,000 are wheelchair users

Visual: ~ 350,000

Hearing: ~ 800,000 di cui circa 50,000 sordi prelinguali

Learning and Mental: ~ 750,000

 

 

Disabled people by age

 

< 6 years:  ~ 200,000

6 - 14 years: ~ 188,000

15 - 64 years: ~ 615,000

> 64 years: ~ 2,000,000

 

 

Disabled children in School – estimates of 1998

 

There are 117,643 students with disabilities, attending the school year 1998/99: 

Kindergarten: 10,045 children

Primary Schools: 50,950 students

Medium Secondary Schools: 43,180 students

Superior Secondary Schools: 13,468 students

They are supported by 59,000 special support teachers.


There are approximately 4,000 students with disabilities enrolled in the last year of University.

Employees or Self employed: ~ 210,000
     
of which:
      -  placed in public or private businesses: ~ 192,000
      -  placed in social cooperatives: ~ 15,000

Enrolled in the public employment waiting list: ~ 264,000

Renouncing to enroll in public waiting list: ~ 145,000


Unemployment Rate: 55% (in the South 70%)
