AIDS
FOR HEARING IMPAIRMENT
A
deaf or hearing impaired person can take advantage of the
opportunities offered by the use of a personal computer. Aids
in this case are more related to different software packages
with accurate graphics and interactivity options, facilitate
motivation towards work and visually give feedback on the
work done.
An
adequate software package in an educational context can be
useful for single students or for a group, facilitating nteraction
in the classroom.
There
are different kind of software available, among which:
-
software
forr facilitating learning to read and write
-
software
to learn interactively with image support in composing
elementary sentences.
-
software
for developing use of locating sentences.
-
diagnostic
software, enabling screening of hearing impairment starting
from kindergarten.
-
software
towards rehabilitation, enabling a child to interact with
the computer through the use of a microphone and receive
visual feedback.
Other
kind of help can derive from voice recognition software, as
it can listen and trascribe words pronounced by humans. In
these cases, a deaf person can see on the screen a word spoken
by himself or someone else, therefore this helps acknowledgement
of new words when these new words are difficult to lip-read.
Naturally then there is the problem of associating meaning
to that word, and that is a matter of culture and relationship
that cannot be resolved by software alone.
